Take everything you hear with a grain of salt. One of the most valuable pieces of advice I ever received was about how to take advice.
It was a soccer coach that I was working one on one with when I was 16 or so. He suggested I tried a new technique. His suggestion was contradictory to what other coaches had taught me.
This was deeply disturbing to a kid who admired his coaches. Who wanted to perform at his highest level. How to reconcile the fact that my coaches have never been infallible. What am I supposed to do when I don’t know what will make me better?
I admitted my internal conflict to him. Asking him how this could be. His response will be etched into my mind. “Learning is all about trying new things and figuring out what works for you.”
You must take ownership of lessons learned. Find value and implement based on your moral compass, skills and passions. Awareness goes a long way.
